Billing and AI usage
Understand plans, AI Units, BYOK, usage limits, and the billing dashboard.
Overview
ContractRabbit uses a hybrid billing model: each workspace has a base subscription plan with included usage, and paid plans can use metered overages after included allowances are exhausted.
AI usage is shown as AI Units instead of raw model tokens. AI Units normalize usage across models so a more expensive model consumes more units for the same workload than a lower-cost model.

Annual billing may include discounts. Enterprise pricing, usage commitments, retention, support, and procurement terms are handled through a custom agreement.
Usage
Included usage is pooled at the workspace level. The Billing dashboard shows current-period AI Units, documents, storage, extraction activity, workflow activity, top cost drivers, and estimated overage spend where applicable.
ContractRabbit uses customer-facing usage dimensions:
- AI Units normalize managed AI usage across providers and models.
- Documents represent contracts and supporting documents stored and processed in the workspace.
- Storage covers retained workspace data and processed document artifacts.
- Extraction and workflow activity covers knowledge extraction cells, report runs, agent activity, and platform orchestration where enabled.
- Overages allow paid workspaces to continue after included usage is exhausted, subject to the workspace monthly spend cap.
Free
The Free plan is intended for evaluation. It includes a limited workspace, capped managed AI usage, capped agent messages, capped extraction cells, and limited storage. Bring your own key is not available on the Free plan, and Free workspaces do not use overage billing.
Free users can authenticate with email/password, Google, or Microsoft, but Free is a single-user workspace and does not include team access policy or directory sync.
Basic
Basic is the paid small-team plan. It includes a larger pooled AI Unit allowance, paid-plan BYOK, higher workspace limits, and eligibility for overages where billing is enabled.
Basic uses a $100 default monthly overage spend cap unless your workspace admin changes the cap in Settings > Billing.
Basic supports member invitations and Google or Microsoft sign-in. Microsoft sign-in can be used with Entra-backed work accounts, but Basic does not include SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, or external group-to-role mapping.
Team
Team is for operational legal teams with repeatable review, reporting, and collaboration workflows. It includes a larger pooled usage allowance than Basic, a higher default monthly overage spend cap, and team-oriented admin controls.
Team uses a $500 default monthly overage spend cap unless your workspace admin changes the cap in Settings > Billing.
Team adds stronger self-serve access controls: verified domains, request-access approval, optional auto-join for verified domains, and the ability to require Microsoft sign-in for selected domains. These controls still use ContractRabbit authorization and seat limits; they are not SCIM directory sync.
Enterprise
Enterprise plans are configured with ContractRabbit directly. Pricing, allowances, data controls, support, retention, procurement, and overages are handled through a custom agreement.
Enterprise can include Microsoft Entra ID SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning and deprovisioning, directory-sync monitoring, and Entra group mapping to ContractRabbit org:admin and org:member roles.
AI Units
AI Units are the customer-facing AI usage meter.
- Raw input and output tokens are kept for audit and diagnostics.
- The selected provider and model determine how many AI Units a request consumes.
- Larger prompts, larger documents, longer outputs, and higher-impact models consume more AI Units.
- Invoices and usage dashboards show AI Units rather than provider-specific token prices.
In Admin > Settings > AI Models, model selectors show an AI Unit impact label. This helps compare models without exposing raw provider input/output token pricing.
Bring Your Own Key
Bring your own key lets a paid workspace use its own OpenAI or Google provider API key. BYOK is available on Basic, Team, and Enterprise.
When BYOK is enabled:
- Your organization pays the model provider directly for provider token usage.
- ContractRabbit still tracks observed AI Units for analytics, support, abuse controls, and fair-use limits.
- ContractRabbit can still bill for platform usage such as storage, workflow orchestration, extraction activity, audit, and support according to your plan.
- Provider keys must be added and verified before they can be selected for runtime use.
Usage Dashboard
The Billing section of Settings shows current-period usage:
- Managed AI Units used against the included allowance
- Storage estimate and storage snapshot status
- Agent messages and knowledge extraction cells
- Workflow and report activity where enabled
- Model usage breakdown
- AI Unit history
- Top cost drivers by feature and model
- Recent LLM calls
- Estimated overage spend where applicable
- Monthly overage spend-cap status and paid-plan spend-cap editing
Use Update Storage to record a current storage snapshot for the period. ContractRabbit also records storage snapshots automatically.
Overage Spend Caps
Paid workspaces can set a monthly overage spend cap in Settings > Billing.
- A blank cap uses the plan default: $100 for Basic and $500 for Team.
- A lower cap can reduce surprise spend for teams evaluating heavier workflows.
- When the cap is reached, read-only access remains available, but expensive AI, extraction, and workflow actions may pause until the next billing period or until the cap is changed.
Limits and Caps
ContractRabbit enforces plan limits before expensive work starts where possible:
- Free workspaces cannot use BYOK.
- Free workspace activity caps stop agent and extraction workflows when limits are reached.
- Seat limits are checked before inviting new team members.
- Seat limits are checked before approving access requests or auto-joining verified-domain users.
- Document and Free storage limits are checked before adding content.
- Paid-plan overage spend caps can stop additional AI or extraction work when the configured monthly cap is reached.
When a workspace approaches a Free plan allowance, the dashboard shows an upgrade prompt before the cap is hit.
